SAN MARTIN, Calif. – With four career runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour, Charlie Wi has experience contending, but not winning.

That could change Sunday in his 158th career start. Wi shot 7-under 64 in his third round to trail Frys.com Open leader Briny Baird - winless in 347 previous PGA Tour tournaments - by three strokes. The Cal product is cautious about his expectations for a repeat performance in the final round.

‘Golf is just a funny game,” Wi said. “Today you can have a great day and tomorrow you don’t know what is going to happen.”

One of Wi’s runner-up finishes came this year at Colonial. Playing in the final group on Sunday with David Toms, Wi shot 69 but lost by a shot to Toms, who closed with 67.

As he prepares to tee off in one of the final three groups Sunday, Wi will use that experience to try to produce a different end result.

‘I just know that I like being near the lead and it’s fun,” he said. “That’s why we practice so hard. I was in the final group and I draw some experience I had from that.”
