Rory McIlroy came up two shots shy of catching KLM Open winner Simon Dyson, but his third-place finish in the Netherlands was good enough to surpass Martin Kaymer for third in the latest Official World Golf Ranking.
The U.S. Open champion still faces a significant gap (1.12 points) to catch world No. 2 Lee Westwood, whose deficit with top-ranked Luke Donald grew to 2.27 points. Kaymer failed to make the cut in his KLM defense and lost three places in the ranking as the idle Steve Stricker and Dustin Johnson moved into fourth and fifth place, respectively. Jason Day remains seventh.
Matt Kuchar and Phil Mickelson swapped places, leaving Mickelson again on the edge of falling outside the top 10 for the first time in five years.
Dyson moved to 28th from 55th with his second win of the year.
Tiger Woods continues to fall, dropping another two spots from 44th to 46th. To automatically qualify for his own Chevron World Challenge in December, Woods must remain in the top 50 after the BMW Championship.
