In 2016, might we see a U.S. Olympic team of Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson and … Michael Phelps?
The only way the most decorated Olympian in history will compete in the Rio Games, he joked, was if he “somehow” qualified as a golfer.
Of course, sensibly, he went on to clarify his remarks, telling The Associated Press it was “very unlikely” to happen “over the next three years.”
Also very unlikely is that he will head to Rio de Janeiro as a swimmer, after racking up 22 medals during his illustrious career. Said Phelps, “I have already told (his mother Debbie) that I will not be competing, so do not get her hopes up.”
Phelps will star in the next season of Golf Channel’s “The Haney Project,” which returns in February, and the 27-year-old apparently has some game. Earlier this month, at the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, he holed a 153-foot putt at Kingbarns. He played the event as a 16 handicap.
