Popular PGA TOUR player Fred Couples is set to be named the next captain of the United States Presidents Cup team, according to a report.
Golf World has reported on its Web site that the official announcement will be made on Tuesday.
Couples would replace Jack Nicklaus, who guided the U.S. to a 2-0-1 record in the last three matches against the international team. The Americans have won two straight competitions to run their record to 5-1-1 overall.
Nicklaus and Gary Player negotiated a controversial tie in South Africa in 2003.
Couples will be 50 when the Presidents Cup begins Oct. 8, 2009 at Harding Park in San Francisco. He is a 15-time winner on the PGA TOUR, including the 1992 Masters.
