Greens Damaged Prior to New Zealand Open

WHANGAPARAOA, New Zealand -- The Gulf Harbour Country Club, host of this weekend’s New Zealand Open, had four greens damaged early Wednesday local time.

Damage to the greens was found Wednesday morning prior to the Pro-Am tournament. Three of the greens had holes dug in them, while the fourth was written on. All damage was repaired in time for the Pro-Am tournament.

‘It’s very disappointing, but our greens staff have repaired the damage and it won’t have any effect on the tournament,’ said Peter Wall, a spokesman for Gulf Harbour Country Club. ‘We have a rare opportunity to show off New Zealand and the Whangaparaoa region to more than 200 million homes around the world this week, and this does not reflect well on us as a nation.’

Police are investigating the incident and have increased security for the remainder of the tournament.
