The European Tour’s inaugural Abu Dhabi Golf Championship (TGC, Thurs. Sun 9AM/ET) debuts this week with an outstanding field. Five of the top 14 players in the world are scheduled to compete, led by world No. 2 Vijay Singh. Singh, coming off two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour to start his year, is making his first appearance in The Gulf since 1993.
Other top-ranked players teeing it up are Sergio Garcia, Colin Montgomerie, Chris DiMarco and David Howell. DiMarco and John Daly are the only golfers from the United States expected to play.
The field is comprised of 120 players, as players on the European Tour compete in the sixth event of the 2006 season. Many events over the years have been staged in The Gulf. This week’s tournament marks the 25th European Tour event to be played in the area, following 16 Dubai Desert Classics and eight Qatar Masters.
This is the first of a three-week stay in the Gulf for the European Tour, followed by the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and the Dubai Desert Classic.
Ernie Els will look to defend his title next week at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
