An appreciation for links golf

TURNBERRY, Scotland – Mathew Goggin doesn’t have the best record at the Open Championship, having finished no better than 46th in three starts, but that line has done little to dim his appreciation for links golf or diminish his expectations.

The Australian opened with a 4-under 66 for a share of second place on Thursday at Turnberry, a card his swing coach Dale Lynch called a very un-Goggin-like.

“His ballstriking usually carries him, but today he made a lot of putts,” said Lynch, noting his man rolled in a 40 footer for birdie at the last. “But he really loves the place. I couldn’t get him off of it last night.”
