Spieth adds Mayakoba Golf Classic to schedule

Jordan Spieth is adding another new event to his schedule.

Tournament officials for the Mayakoba Golf Classic announced Friday that Spieth has joined the field for next month’s event in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. That gives Spieth back-to-back starts, after he’d previously committed to next week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Last season, Spieth didn’t meet the PGA Tour’s strength-of-schedule regulation after he failed to play 25 events or add a new tournament. It was believed that Spieth was subject to a possible fine, suspension or other penalty, but his adding two new events to the early portion of the new wraparound schedule should satisfy the Tour.

Other notables in the field for the Mayakoba event include Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau, Gary Woodland, Kevin Kisner, Billy Horschel and Matt Kuchar.

Winless in the past 15 months, Spieth has slipped outside the top 10 in the world rankings for the first time since 2014.
