FORT WORTH, Texas – One element that is unique to the Colonial field is the practice of allowing former champions a say in who receives an exemption into the invitational.

Two spots in the field are awarded based on a vote of former champions. According to officials, a ballot was sent out with 19 players on it who had never participated in the event and “seven or eight” former champions voted to give Erik Compton and Billy Hurley III spots in the field.

According to the official, the votes were overwhelmingly in favor of Compton and Hurley.
