Phil drops Colonial, picks up Byron Nelson

Phil Mickelson will be changing where he plays during the PGA Tour’s Texas Swing, opting to skip Colonial in the future. Instead, Mickelson will play in the HP Byron Nelson Championship, according to the “Dallas Morning News.”

Mickelson has not been to Las Colinas since 2007, when he finished T-3.

‘I’m looking forward to going back to Dallas. It’s been a while since I’ve been there. I haven’t played it since the redesign,’ Mickelson said, referring to the work done by D.A. Weibring in 2008.

The redesign done by Keith Foster at Colonial, however, no longer jibes with Mickelson’s approach that led to two wins in 2000 and ’08.

‘With the redesign, I’m afraid I won’t be playing it anymore,’ he said, last playing the event in ’10. ‘It doesn’t give me a power advantage. I know all the shotmakers will be there every year. But I don’t see any of the long hitters playing there anymore. There’s no decision making now. It’s all irons, irons, irons.’
