PGA Tour shortens Bermuda event to 54 holes because of high winds; playoff still set for Monday

High winds have canceled the final round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, though there will still be golf played on Monday morning in Southampton, Bermuda.

The PGA Tour, which postponed final-round play at Port Royal Golf Course for the day at 8 a.m. ET Sunday morning because of wind gusts exceeding 40 mph, announced the shortening of the event to 54 holes shortly after 5 p.m.

“Due to the unfavorable weather forecast for Monday at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and the uncertainty surrounding the completion of the entire final round on Monday, the tournament results will be considered final through 54 holes in accordance with PGA Tour regulations,” the Tour’s statement read.

Also, Austin Smotherman and Seamus Power, who currently share the 54-hole lead at 16 under, are set to compete in a sudden-death playoff, which will begin on the par-3 16th at 8 a.m. ET.

Golf Channel will carry live action.

This is Smotherman’s first PGA Tour playoff while Power lost the 2021 ISCO Championship on the sixth extra hole to J.T. Poston. The Irishman is a two-time Tour winner with his most recent title at this tournament in 2022. Smotherman collected his first Tour victory three weeks ago at the Bank of Utah Championship.

Monday’s forecast includes scattered showers and gusts up to 30 mph by the afternoon.

Prior to the initial postponement, the Tour had already pushed up tee times, including the final grouping to 8:46 a.m. ET, before delaying them 30 minutes because of high winds at 6 a.m. Sunday. The next update, two hours later, cancelled play for the remainder of the day.
