The R&A announced exemptions and Open Qualifying Series venues for the 2027 Open Championship on Tuesday with one notable exception.
An exemption for LIV Golf’s Order of Merit leader “remains under review until the 2027 LIV Golf schedule is confirmed,” according to the R&A release. Joaquin Niemann played this year’s Open Championship under the Order of Merit exemption.
LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced it would pull its funding of the league following the 2026 season.
According to various reports, LIV CEO Scott O’Neil met with players last week and outlined what LIV Golf 2.0 will look like if the league can secure funding. The new-look league would include a 10-event schedule in 2027, with five events containing a $5.5 million purse and five with a $9.5 million purse.
Players will still have plenty of opportunities to qualify for next year’s Open Championship at St. Andrews. The Open Qualifying Series will include 19 events in 15 countries beginning with this week’s Open de France.
The R&A also announced sites for final qualifying in Great Britain and Ireland and the championship will again have a “last-chance qualifier” played the Monday before the Open Championship on the Old Course.
