The third round of the Genesis Scottish Open was suspended at 5:45 a.m. ET due to fog in North Berwick, Scotland, that caused delays and course visibility issues throughout the morning.
Play resumed at 8:10 a.m. ET, but the fog returned later in the day and eventually sent players into the clubhouse shortly before 3 p.m. ET (8 p.m. local) to mark the day’s second stoppage — and this time for good.
The final pairing — off split tees — of Tom Kim and Jordan Smith teed off after 1:15 p.m. ET and will now have to play 11 holes Sunday morning before the tournament’s fourth and final round.
They’re not the only ones looking at an extended day.
When the horn blew, Matt Fitzpatrick and Michael Thorbjornsen were tied at 11 under. Thorbjornsen was in the middle of playing the 14th hole, while Fitzpatrick had carded his first bogey of the third round at the par-4 eighth.
Six more sit T-3 at 10 under, including last year’s winner, Chris Gotterup, and U.S. Open champ Wyndham Clark.
Rory McIlroy, who is playing alongside Fitzpatrick, is 3 over on his round through eight holes and sits T-25 at the time of the second suspension. He entered the day tied with Smith and Kim for the lead.
Smith is one of the half dozen at 10 under, while Kim sits T-9 at 9 under. They will be on the eighth hole at the Renaissance Club when Round 3 play resumes at 2 a.m. ET (7 a.m. local).
