U.S. Open 2026 weather forecast: Wind, wind and more wind at Shinnecock Hills

Scheffler discusses wind conditions, what motivates him and reflects on career

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — It will be a lovely week, for the most part, for those attending the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

For players, that’s more questionable.

Temperatures will range from highs of 78 to 84 degrees during the championship days. There’s a 48% chance of rain Thursday, but little-to-nothing expected thereafter.

But the wind.

Oh, the wind. It is expected to blow steadily between 15-20 mph throughout the week. On Thursday, with the possible showers, it will be in the 20-30 mph range.

Golf Channel brings you the latest news and updates from the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.

Gusts are forecast over 30 mph.

That will certainly affect how the USGA will set up the course as players like 2011 U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy anticipates slower green speeds.

“I think with the wind they’re expecting on Thursday, I’d say it seems they’d want to get the greens back to the 10s (on the Stimpmeter),” McIlroy said. “There was only gusts of 25 to 30 [Monday], and balls wouldn’t stand on the 11th green. That’s where you just have to use a little bit of caution.”
