MELBOURNE, Australia - Rex Hoggard gives predictions for Day 3 afternoon fourballs at the Presidents Cup:
Webb Simpson-Bubba Watson (U.S.) vs. Retief Goosen-Charl Schwartzel (Internationals)
The line: There’s only been one tandem in Presidents Cup history to go 4-0 paired together (Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in 2009), but the rookies seem like a lock to join them. The two have trailed just four holes all week and haven’t seen the 18th green. They won’t see it Saturday afternoon either. U.S., 3 and 2.
Tiger Woods-Dustin Johnson (U.S.) vs. K.T. Kim-Y.E. Yang (Internationals)
The line: Neither Woods nor Johnson have been particularly sharp on the greens, although they did get off the schneid with their morning foursome victory and Kim and Yang are likely the International side’s weakest pairing. U.S., 2 and 1.
Steve Stricker-Matt Kuchar (U.S.) vs. Geoff Ogilvy-K.J. Choi (Internationals)
The line: Questions abound about Stricker’s health, although U.S. captain Fred Couples said he’s fine, and the American duo will struggle against hometown favorite Ogilvy and Choi. Internationals, 1 up.
Hunter Mahan-Bill Haas (U.S.) vs. Aaron Baddeley-Jason Day (International)
The line: International captain Greg Norman had high hopes for Baddeley-Day, which is why he marched them out together for four sessions, but a combination of on-form opponents and missed opportunities have led to a pedestrian week for the duo. U.S., 1 up.
Jim Furyk-Nick Watney (U.S.) vs. Adam-Scott-Ernie Els (Internationals)
The line: Furyk has been perfect paired with Phil Mickelson this week, but he will find things a little more difficult in the afternoon against the heart of the International team. International, 2 and 1.
