PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The 15 players that John Merrick sent packing with his 15-foot birdie at the last hole likely weren’t cheering his achievement, but PGA Tour officials might have been.
Merrick’s closing birdie at TPC Sawgrass’ 18th hole on Friday moved the cut line to 2 under with 70 players making it to the weekend.
“I had no idea, that’s the way it works sometimes,” said Merrick following his even-par 72. “I missed plenty of cuts by a shot.”
Had Merrick not birdied the last officials would have had to initiate a secondary cut, which has been criticized by many players, on Saturday for the second consecutive year.
