Mickelson fires seventh straight round over par

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Phil Mickelson has established plenty of personal records over the years, but he set a dubious one at The Greenbrier Classic on Friday.

With a second consecutive score of 1-over 71, Mickelson not only missed the cut, he failed to shoot par or better for the seventh straight round – the first time in his PGA Tour career that he’s endured such a streak.

“I don’t know what to say about that,” said Mickelson, who also had three birdies, two bogeys and a double for the second straight day. “It hasn’t been great. The parts don’t feel that far off, but I haven’t been putting them together. It doesn’t feel bad off the tee; it doesn’t feel bad with the iron play; it doesn’t feel bad chipping or putting. But I’m making a lot of loose drives here or there, some loose iron shots here or there, missing some short putts here or there, and just haven’t been putting it all together.”

His round was further marred by a strange circumstance on the 11^th green – his second hole of the day. As Mickelson attempted to mark his ball, he dropped the coin and it caused the ball to move, resulting in a one-stroke penalty.

“I was marking my ball and the coin slipped out of my finger and hit the ball and moved it,” he explained after making par on the hole. “First time that’s happened to me, I think, that I can ever remember.”

Next up for Mickelson is The Open Championship, to be played in two weeks at Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s Golf Club, where he finished T-30 back in 2001. He revealed that he will travel overseas this coming Monday, arriving at the course on Friday for close to a week of preparation time prior to the opening round.
