The U.S. Golf Association named former USGA president Jim Vernon and amateur standout Carol Semple Thompson as captains of the men's and women's American teams for the biennial World Amateur Team Championships.
The women's event will be played played Sept. 27-30, and the men will play Oct. 4-7 in Antalya, Turkey.
Semple Thompson will fill the role previously awarded to the late Barbara Douglas, who died last month after a three-year battle with cancer.
Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2008, she was captain for the victorious U.S. Curtis Cup teams in 2006 and '08. She won the 1973 U.S. Women's Amateur and four consecutive U.S. Senior Women's Amateur titles from 1999-02.
"This is a wonderful honor but bittersweet since Barbara Douglas was an accomplished leader of the women’s committee who deserved the honor,” said Semple Thompson in a release. “But I will enjoy the moment, as it is always such fun to be with young, brilliant players. They make me feel young."
Vernon was president of the USGA in 2008 and '09. He retired from the organization when Jim Hyler was installed as president in 2010.
The World Amateur Team Championships were in Argentina in 2010. France won the men’s title, with the U.S. finishing third. Korea won the women’s title, with the U.S. finishing second.
