A 'wonderful experience' for Watson

SANDWICH, England – Tom Watson never made a double bogey, made a hole-in-one and had a front-row seat to watch the beginning of a potentially successful career of a young European star.

It was a pretty good week for the 61-year-old Watson at his 34th Open Championship. He shot 72-70-72-72 for a 6-over 286 total.

Watson was paired with amateur Tom Lewis the first two days and saw Lewis shoot an opening-round 65 to capture a share of the lead. Lewis is named after Watson. During the second round Watson aced the par-3, 178-yard sixth hole with a 4-iron when it bounced once and jumped into the hole. The consecutive 72s over the weekend were shot in the week's worst weather conditions.

“It was a wonderful experience,” Watson said. “I didn’t have a lot of expectations coming in here, but today I kind of found a little bit of something with my golf swing, hit the ball more solidly.”
