Play called at Wyndham; Monday finish on tap

Sergio Garcia will have to sleep on the lead again in his quest to end a four-year winless drought on the PGA Tour.

The final group managed to complete only four holes Sunday before the final round was suspended because of inclement weather, setting up the first Monday finish on Tour this season.

The final round is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. ET; Golf Channel will broadcast the action live.

Garcia had a one-shot lead, at 15 under par, when the horn sounded at 3:10 p.m. The range at Sedgefield Country Club was briefly reopened to the players, in hopes of a 5 p.m. restart, but the course was deemed unplayable because of standing water on several fairways and greens.

Thirty-eight players were still on the course when play was called, meaning the Greensboro event will have its first Monday finish since 1983.

Not only is Garcia, 32, trying to pick up his first Tour victory since the 2008 Players, but he’s also attempting to play his way onto the European Ryder Cup team, as well. If the Spaniard doesn’t qualify on points alone – a victory or no worse than a three-way tie for third at the Wyndham would vault him into the top 10 – then he seems a likely captain’s pick, what with his good form here and his friendship with captain Jose Maria Olazabal.

But Garcia will need to stave off plenty of pursuers when play resumes Monday – including another former Players champion.

Clark, who last August underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right elbow, finally has rounded back into form in the past month, finishing in the top 15 in his past two starts. The diminutive South African is currently in a tie for second, along with Cauley, a Tour rookie, and Dufner, already a two-time winner this season. Reigning FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas was among four players three shots behind.

“It’s a tough situation for all of us,” Clark told reporters. “All of us would like to continue playing. You get into a rhythm and you’d like to keep going. It will be the same for all of us.”
