CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. – Rory McIlroy didn’t win the BMW Championship trophy Sunday, but he left with a smile before heading out to see the Denver Broncos play.
He closed with a 4-under-par 66 to tie for eighth but left making light of his recurring nightmare at the 12th hole.
McIlroy endured yet another four-putt at No. 12. He took four putts from 4 feet 5 inches on Saturday while making triple bogey. He took four putts from 19 feet while making double bogey on Sunday.
“It’s not my worst,” McIlroy said. “I’ve had five-putts before. It’s one of those things. At least I can laugh about it and move on.”
With a pair of pars at the 12th over the weekend, McIlroy would have finished solo second, a shot behind Billy Horschel.
McIlroy met Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning in the Cherry Hills clubhouse earlier this week. After his round Sunday, he went to see the Broncos play the Indianapolis Colts Sunday night at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. He was shown on NBC signing autographs on the field before the game.
