TCU junior Julien Brun made the unusual decision Saturday to forgo a spot in the NCAA Championship.

Brun shot 10-under 206 to earn medalist honors at the NCAA San Antonio regional. Because his team did not finish in the top 5 – the Horned Frogs finished sixth, two shots back – Brun was exempt into next week’s NCAA finals because he was the low individual on a non-qualifying team.

Brun, however, will not make the trip next week to Prairie Dunes. Instead, he will honor an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Crowne Plaza Invitational, a spot he earned by winning the Spirit Invitational last November. Brun will play the event as an amateur.

As a result, UCF’s Ricardo Gouveia is next in line to receive the individual spot. He tied for fifth at Briggs Ranch.

Brun won the Big 12 title by nine shots and now regionals – his third victory of the season – to boost his career win total to nine. In 2012, he won a Challenge Tour event as an amateur, but opted to stay in school.
