Jon Rahm had an opening round to forget at Wentworth Golf Club on Thursday.
The two-time major winner posted a 6-over 78 to tie his highest single round on the DP World Tour.
Rahm recorded just one birdie on the round — at the par-5 12th hole, against five bogeys and a double.
His second best chance at a circle came on the final hole but Rahm wound up settling for his third straight par to finish off the round and enter into the clubhouse at T-136, just one shot ahead of Marcel Siem in dead last and 12 back of co-leaders Aaron Rai and Joakim Lagergren.
Daniel Brown was trending to hold that spot at 10 over through 15 holes but withdrew from the BMW PGA Championship giving the infamy to Siem.
As for Rahm, it marks his second 78 of the year — he notably went without a birdie in his opening round at the Masters, the highest of his major championship career.
His previous 78 on the DP World Tour came in the opening round of the Andalucia Masters.
The putter was his biggest culprit on Thursday, costing him strokes at a pair of par-4s — No. 6 and No. 15 — at Wentworth.
While he ranks No. 1 in strokes gained putting on LIV Golf, Rahm sits 32nd in the same category on the DP World Tour.
His future with the LIV circuit, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month, remains uncertain.
“I still have a contract with LIV 1.0 that I’m more than willing to fulfill,” Rahm said ahead of last week’s Irish Open. “Like I said, time will tell.”
