CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Martin Flores moved into position Friday to make a run at his first PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship.
With a 4-under-par 68 in the morning, Flores was at 9 under overall, and he shares the lead with Angel Cabrera heading into the weekend.
It marks the first time Flores, 32, has held a lead going into the weekend of a PGA Tour event. He had the first-round lead at the FedEx St. Jude Classic last year and ended up tying for 47th. A Dallas native and University of Oklahoma graduate, Flores is in his fourth season as a PGA Tour member. His best finish on tour is a tie for fourth at last year’s John Deere Classic.
“I’m in great position,” Flores said. “I just try to go out there each day and play my best and be very, very patient, because a lot of times in the past, I’ve tried to be too perfect, and for some reason, this sport doesn’t really work out that way.”
Flores did hit a perfect shot at the 11th, holing a sand wedge from 105 yards for eagle.
