With the top spot in the Rolex Rankings within reach, Stacy Lewis fired a 6-under 65 Friday to move into contention at the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship.
Lewis is 7 under overall, and when second-round play was suspended because of darkness at Kingsmill she was tied for second, one shot behind Hee Young Park.
A winner earlier this month at the North Texas LPGA Shootout, Lewis leads the Race to the CME Globe and is currently second in the world behind Inbee Park. With Park absent from this week’s field, Lewis has a chance to pass her with a win or a solo second-place finish in Virginia.
World No. 3 Lydia Ko also has a chance to move to No. 1 this week, and needs a win to do so. Ko shot a 1-under 70 in the opening round and was 1 under through 12 holes of her second round when play was stopped. At 2 under, she’s tied for 25th and six shots off the lead.
Other top names in contention after two days include Lexi Thompson, who has five holes still to play in her second round and who sits alongside Lewis in a tie for second place, and former world No. 1 Yani Tseng, who is tied for 12th after rounds of 68 and 70. Cristie Kerr, the event’s defending champion and a three-time winner at Kingsmill, is tied with Tseng at 4 under after an even-par 71 in the second round.
