UAB senior Dunne among 12 Open Final Qualifiers

Twelve more players punched their tickets to Hoylake via Final Qualifying.

A field of 288 players vying for 12 total spots at four different venues teed it up Tuesday in 36-hole qualifiers at Hillside, Woburn, Gailes Links and Sunningdale.

Hillside: John Singleton, Christopher Hanson and Oscar Floren each shot 6 under for the two rounds to qualify. They beat out Oscar Floren in a playoff. First-round leader Pontus Widegren backed up his opening 66 with an afternoon 75, missing the cut by three shots. Matt Fitzpatrick, the new pro who earned low-amateurs honors at the 2013 Open and the 2014 U.S. Open, failed to qualify after rounds of 73-75.

Woburn: Amateur Paul Dunne, who plays college golf at UAB and was part of the victorious European Palmer Cup team, earned medalist honors after back-to-back rounds of 67. Oliver Fisher (-7) also moved on, then Rhys Enoch defeated Jack Wilson and amateur Tomasz Anderson to earn the final spot at 6 under.

Gailes: Marc Warren (-9) and James McLeary (-7) qualified, then Paul McKechnie defeated Rhys Davies in a playoff for the final spot at 3 under.

Sunningdale: Matthew Southgate (-4) was medalist, while former U.S. Amateur champion Beyong-Hun An (-3) and Christopher Rodgers (+1) earned the other two spots. Ollie Schniederjans, the No. 1-ranked amateur in the world, was among the players who did not make the cut.
