Olafur Loftsson made history at the Wyndham Championship on Thursday.
The Gardabaer, Iceland, native became the first golfer from that country to compete in a PGA Tour event, posting a 2-under 68 in the opening round.
A two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection from Charlotte, the rising senior opened with a double-bogey on the 10th hole at Sedgefield CC, but that was his only blemish, as he bounced back with four birdies during the remainder of the round.
“It’s a little bit strange, you know, being around these guys, but I’m not intimidated by being here,” Loftsson said during a pre-tournament press conference. “It’s just a lot of fun. I’m going to enjoy these few days and enjoy this experience and try to learn as much as I can because I intend to be here in the future.”
He received a spot in this week’s field by virtue of a four-stroke victory at last week’s Cardinal Amateur, also held in Greensboro, N.C.
