The USGA has increased the purse for the 2026 U.S. Open to $22.5 million – up $1 million over the 2025 tournament purse.
USGA CEO Mike Whan announced the increase during a press conference on Wednesday ahead of the 126th U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York.
“Last time we were here was 2018,” Whan said. “The purse was $12 million. We’re back in 2026 with a purse of $22.5 million. We’re proud of keeping that pace as well.”
Come Sunday, the man who hoists the trophy at the notoriously difficult Shinnecock will receive $4.5 million. Last year’s winner J.J. Spaun took home $4.3 million after his win at Oakmont.
The U.S. Open’s purse is in line with the other major purse increases so far this season.
Augusta National also increased the Masters purse to $22.5 million this year, with Rory McIlroy taking home $4.5 million for his win. The PGA Championship increased its purse to $20.5 million in May.
The purse for July’s Open Championship has not yet been announced, but a total of $17 million was awarded in 2025. Scottie Scheffler took home $3.1 million of that for his win.
