Michael Kim made a 24-foot, 4-inch putt on his final hole Friday to shoot 59 at the 3M Open.
Kim recorded the 16th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history, making 12 birdies and no bogeys at the par-71 TPC Twin Cities.

“I kind of remember thinking on 18 that you have to go for it, 60 or 61 doesn’t really make too much of a difference,” Kim said after his round. “To shoot 59 today was pretty cool and feels like I’m part of the history books, which is great.”
It’s the first 59 on Tour since Jake Knapp in the first round of last year’s Cognizant Classic. He went on to tie for sixth. The last five players to break 60 on Tour have not won that week. The last to do so was Brandt Snedeker in the 2018 Wyndham Championship.
Kim’s only Tour title came that season at the John Deere Classic.
Still, it’s been a career renaissance the last few season’s for Kim. This year, he finished tied for second at the Valero Texas Open and is currently 65th in FedExCup points.
His performance this week, however, comes on the heels of three consecutive missed cuts.
After opening in 2-under 69 to sit seven off the lead, Kim made an early charge in Round 2. He made five consecutive birdies on Nos. 3-7 and add another at the ninth to turn in 29.
After birdies at Nos. 10 and 12, he finished with four straight. That included, in order, birdie putts of 11'8", 13'7", 17'1" and 24'4". Kim needed only 21 putts for the day.
At 14 under for the tournament, he currently leads a trio of players by three shots. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is seven back.
“Yeah, I think it will be important for me to not compare myself tomorrow to today’s round, just try to — even if I get off to a poor start or just an OK start, to not be so disappointed that I’m not playing as well as I did today,” Kim said.
“We still have a long ways to go... Nowhere near done and hopefully I can shoot a couple good ones for the next couple days.”
