At 42, Furyk believes he still has good golf ahead

SAN FRANCISCO – Don’t tell Jim Furyk that this might have been his last best chance to win a major.

Don’t tell him that at 42, he’s getting old.

Furyk left the The Olympic Club Sunday as motivated as he was disappointed after stumbling down the stretch in a bid to win his second U.S. Open.

“Two years ago, I was the Player of the Year in the United States,” Furyk said. “I played poorly last year, and all of a sudden, I'm middle aged. So, I’ve got to be honest with you, that pisses me off.

“So, yeah, I think I have a few more good years. I've been saying it all year, I would like to get another opportunity. Whether or not that happens again in a major championship, I don't know. I know I let one slide today. Hey, Webb [Simpson] went out there and got it, too.”

Opening the day with a share of the lead, Furyk fought to hold onto it all afternoon. He did so until hooking his ball into the trees at the 16^th hole and making bogey. That’s where Simpson took the lead. Furyk needed to make birdie at the 17^th or 18^th holes to have a chance, but ended up making bogey at two of the last three holes to tie for fourth.

“I really felt like I had a lot of confidence in myself and a lot of belief in myself,” Furyk said. “You feel like you're going win the golf tournament, so when you don't, it's that much more disappointing."
