ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – A notice on the wall of the caddie dining trailer greeted loopers as they came off the Seaside Course on Thursday at The McGladrey Classic with a hopeful message.
“(Scott Steele) made it through the toughest part of the battle,” the notice, which has been updated daily, begins.
Steele is a longtime Tour caddie who suffered a heart attack during last week’s Greater Hickory Classic on the Champions Tour.
According to the notice, which is being supplied by fellow caddie Mark Huber, Steele was placed in a hypothermic coma “so his body can recuperate from the trauma,” and he’s currently in the Frye’s Medical Center in Hickory, N.C.
Steele, who was caddying for Kirk Triplett, collapsed while walking through a parking lot and Champions Tour player Steve Pate administered CPR.
“They said he was unconscious for five or six minutes before anyone found him,” said Scott Gneiser, David Toms’ caddie, at Sea Island. “It’s really a sad deal.”
