Woods misses second cut of season at Greenbrier

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – Despite three birdies in his last seven holes, Tiger Woods missed the cut at The Greenbrier Classic after shooting 1-under 69 Friday. He finished at even par for two rounds and missed the cut by one.

The missed cut marks his ninth as a professional and his second on the season – his other coming at the Wells Fargo Invitational in May. This also marks the first time Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson both missed the cut at the same event as professionals.

The second round was interrupted due to a rain delay as Woods was staring down a 13-foot birdie putt at No. 9. When the rain cleared and play resumed at 6 p.m. ET, Woods missed the birdie putt. He followed that with two bogeys before a birdie at the 12th.

Woods blamed his performance on altitude and not being able to adjust to yardages. This was Woods' first time playing The Greenbrier.

“I just did not have the feel for the distances,” Woods said. "I know we're at altitude, but I just couldn't get the ball hit pin high no matter what I did."

Woods said hitting shots pin high is the hallmark of his game and that’s what tripped him up this week.

"I can hit pin high pretty consistently and I just did not do that at all."

Woods is coming off his third victory of the season at last week’s AT&T National at Congressional Country Club. In two weeks, he tees it up at Royal Lytham & St. Annes for his attempt at a fourth Open Championship title and major No. 15 overall.

When asked when he’ll make the trip across the pond for the Open, he deadpanned, “Before the tournament.”
