Fantasy Island: 2011 Wyndham Championship

GolfChannel.com experts offer up their picks for the Wyndham Championship. Each week a panel of experts will offer up their picks from three groups of players based on Golf Channel’s new fantasy game, Fantasy Challenge. We will also keep track of their scores and standings. The panel consists of: senior writers Rex Hoggard, Randall Mell and Jason Sobel; contributors John Hawkins and Charlie Rymer; editorial director Jay Coffin; ‘Morning Drive’ hosts Gary Williams and Erik Kuselias; contributor Win McMurry; writer for NBCSports.com’s ProGolf Talk, Ryan Ballengee; and RotoWorld.com’s Rob Bolton.

You can battle the experts and play along as well. Just click here to get into the game.Compete against the GolfChannel.com experts and other fans in our Fantasy Challenge.

In parentheses, next to the names, are the participants’ 2011 points earned and ranking among the 17 Fantasy Challenge ‘experts.’

Rex Hoggard (9,373,167; 4th)

Group A: David Toms: Last year’s runner-up was solid last week at Atlanta Athletic Club (T-4) and Sedgefield is a ballstriker’s paradise.

Group B: Trevor Immelman: Is starting to show signs of life after late-summer slide and he needs a big week to improve his playoff picture (94th in FedEx Cup points).

Group C: Steve Flesch: Fresh off a T-3 in Reno, his best finish on Tour since his 2007 victory in Reno, and he’s had success in Greensboro (T-3 in 2006).

Randall Mell (7,211,379; 11th)

Group A: Bill Haas: Twentysomething run continues with Haas at home in North Carolina.

Group B: Ben Crane: Funny man showed his back’s feeling better at PGA Championship.

Group C: Bob Estes: Built some momentum at the Greenbrier with his second-place finish.

Charlie Rymer (8,488,455; 7th)

Group A: David Toms: Just keeps on getting better and based on what we’ve seen the last two weeks he’s ready to win.

Group B: Davis Love: Has played solid golf this season and, who knows, maybe being very close to Chapel Hill will inspire him.

Group C: Justin Leonard: We saw a winner out of nowhere in Arjun Atwal last year and it’s hard to believe, but Justin Leonard could be a winner from out of nowhere this week.

John Hawkins (8,422,134; 8th)

Group A: Jim Furyk: Closer to regaining top form. Killed by one hole last week.

Group B: Charles Howell III: Has made a little noise in ’11, needs to make more.

Group C: Tom Pernice: At least I know he’ll play hard.

Jay Coffin (11,766,607; 2nd)

Group A: Webb Simpson: That the guy is in Group A proves he’s a worthy pick. Time to breakthrough.

Group B: Ben Crane: Best player in this group. He’s due for another good week too. It’s time.

Group C: Justin Leonard: Just a hunch here, nothing other than that.

Gary Williams (8,350,029; 9th)

Group A: David Toms: He shot a pair of 64s at Sedgefield last year but finished just behind Arjun Atwal.

Group B: Brendon de Jonge: At 48th in the FedEx Cup points, one good week can change his 2012 for the better.

Group C: Justin Leonard: This may be the place for Leonard to make a move to extend his season.

Erik Kuselias (7,234,433; 11th)

Group A: Brandt Snedeker: Snedeker won at Greensboro in 2007 and has finished in the top 8 each of the last two years.

Group B: Charles Howell: In his last appearance in Greensboro, he finished T-13 at Sedgefield.

Group C: Justin Leonard: In the last two seasons he has just one top 10 finish - a tie for third in this very event.

Win McMurry (13,536,211; 1st)

Group A: Webb Simpson: He finished T-8 here last year and has had a solid season so far with six consecutive top-20 finishes until he exited early in Atlanta.

Group B: Lucas Glover: Has a great record at Sedgefield that includes a seventh place finish a year ago. He also has Carolina in his blood.

Group C: Justin Leonard: Tied for third here a year ago. Maybe the good memories will help him to a good finish again this week.

Ryan Ballengee (6,298,699; 13th)

Group A: Brandt Snedeker: He has top-10s in each of the last two years there.

Group B: Kyle Stanley: Stanley has a runner-up and another top-10 in his last three starts.

Group C: Bud Cauley: In five events as a pro, Cauley has missed just one cut and has a top-5 finish.

Rob Bolton (7,953,108; 10th)

Group A: David Toms: Coming on consecutive top 10s in Akron and Atlanta.

Group B: Brendon de Jonge: Charlotte resident is a birdie machine hitting on all cylinders.

Group C: Chris Riley: Top 15s in last two Wyndhams. Coming off T-15 in Reno.
