AVONDALE, La. – World No. 1 Jason Day is within striking distance heading into the weekend at the Zurich Classic. His only hope now is that he gets to play.
Day finished at 7-under 137, five shots back of Brian Stuard, and readied for what could be a weekend full of starts and stops with an iffy weather forecast. A strong line of storms was expected to move through TPC Louisiana in the early afternoon, with more rain expected Sunday.
“You’ve just got to try and stay in the right frame of mind mentally,” Day said. “Try and keep yourself loose, because there is a lot of sitting around, a lot of eating. You’ve got to try and remind yourself that you need to stay sharp here, because it is very easy to get in player dining, start sitting around, start talking to the guys and kind of switch off.”
That’s what might have cost Day a few shots Thursday. He was cruising along in his opening round before a five-hour weather delay. When he returned, he bogeyed his last two holes.
“You’ve just got to stay neutral and get myself the best opportunities I can,” he said.
