PLANO, Texas – Midway through the marathon that is British Open qualifying, Josh Teater is poised to earn his first trip to golf’s oldest championship.

Teater opened with a 6-under 64 in blustery conditions at Gleneagles Country Club early Monday and set the pace at the 36-hole qualifier. Luke Guthrie is alone in second place at 5 under, followed by Brian Davis (66).

The top 8 players qualify for this year’s Open Championship at Muirfield in July.

Four players are tied for fourth at 3 under, including Ryo Ishikawa and Robert Karlsson; and a group of five that features Patrick Cantlay, Trevor Immelman, Camilo Villegas, Johnson Wagner and Jimmy Walker are perched at 2 under and tied for the final qualifying spots.
