Manassero earns U.S. Open berth with BMW win

Matteo Manassero can scrap those Monday plans at Walton Heath.

The 20-year-old Italian was scheduled to play the 36-hole U.S. Open sectional qualifier at the Surrey, England, course.

No longer, not after he won the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday to automatically qualify for the June 13-16 U.S. Open at Merion.

It will be Manassero’s eighth career major start, and he doesn’t have a strong record in his previous appearances in golf’s biggest events. His best finish was a T-13 in his first start, the 2009 British Open. He missed the cut at this year’s Masters (75-74) and last year’s PGA (71-82).

Manassero is projected to move to as high as No. 28 in the latest world rankings.
