BETHESDA, Md. – Phil Mickelson ended his week just the way he began it.
With a double bogey.
In his quest for a first career U.S. Open victory, Mickelson had a pair of unfortunate bookends on what turned out to be an unfortunate week, as he posted scores of 74-69-77-71, finishing outside the top-50 on the final leaderboard for the third time as a professional and first since 2007.
Despite five career runner-up results at this event, the mercurial lefthander remains without a trip to the winner’s circle.
This week, he opened by playing what he termed “horrific” golf in the opening round, and never really improved during the course of the week. Mickelson hit 30 of 56 (53.57 percent) of the fairways and 45 of 72 (62.50 percent) of greens in regulation, while taking 1.65 putts per hole.
Perhaps most telling was the big numbers. During the week, Mickelson posted five double bogeys and nine other bogeys.
"It just gets me more geared up to look forward to the British," Mickelson said. "We have some big tournaments, the British and the PGA, coming up as well as the FedEx Cup, so I'll have the next two weeks to try and get my game ready and head over to Europe."
