Amateur Mao opens Women's Open with a 10 on No. 10

KOHLER, Wis. – Amateur Briana Mao teed it up Thursday in her first U.S. Women’s Open.
She will never forget her first hole, unfortunately. She opened with a quintuple-bogey 10 making her start at the 10th hole.
Mao may or may not find comfort in knowing some of the game’s best players got off to rough starts at Blackwolf Run. Meg Mallon, winner of 18 LPGA events, four of them majors, opened with a 9 at her first hole when the U.S. Women’s Open was first played here in 1998.
Mao, 18, of Sacramento, Calif., just finished up her freshman year at the University of Virginia. She qualified for her first U.S. Women’s Open as medalist at the Wayzata, Minn., sectional.
