Bombs of the Week: Farthest, fastest from Doral

Each week, GolfChannel.com will take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest tee shots on the PGA Tour. Here are the four most important distance-related stats from the WGC-Cadillac Championship, won by Tiger Woods:

Longest drive: Phil Mickelson, 450 yards

Give this one an asterisk. You may recall that Lefty’s tee shot on the 17^th hole during the opening round bounced several times off the cart path. Nicolas Colsaerts had the next-best drive, at a more reasonable 381 yards, on the drivable 16^th hole. That would have matched the longest tee shot of the season that was not hit at Kapalua. As it is, Mickelson’s big blast is the longest of the season, by 22 yards.

Last four leaders: Honda Classic: Nicolas Colsaerts, 367 yards; Northern Trust: Bill Haas, 366; Pebble Beach: 355; Phoenix: Gary Woodland, 379.

Carry distance: Bubba Watson, 309.1 yards

It was a forgettable weekend at Doral for Bubba, who went 71-75 to slip to T-18. But at least he had the longest carry distance of the week, even if it was well back of the biggest tee shot of the season – Graham DeLaet’s 324.2-yard carry at the Honda.

Last four leaders: Honda: DeLaet, 324.2 yards; Northern Trust: Angel Cabrera, 298; Pebble Beach: Robert Garrigus, 292.4; Phoenix: Jason Day, 311.3.

Clubhead speed: Bubba Watson, 181.32 mph

No surprise here, as Bubba topped this list for the second time this season (Phoenix). And just like at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, swinging hard didn’t necessarily equate to success – the reigning Masters champion barely cracked the top 20 at Doral.

Last four leaders: Honda: Graham DeLaet, 180.69 mph; Northern Trust: Charlie Beljan, 182.58; Pebble Beach: Robert Garrigus, 178.51; Phoenix: Watson, 181.89.

Ball speed: Sergio Garcia, 122.55 mph

El Nino makes an appearance in this category for the first time this season, topping the field at Doral. His 122.55 mph ball speed ranks comparably with the rest of the rank and file, though Charlie Beljan’s whopping 128.41 mph tee shot at Riviera will be difficult to beat.
