Bombs of the Week: Farthest, fastest from Honda

Each week, GolfChannel.com will take a detailed look at the players who pounded the farthest and fastest tee shots on the PGA Tour. Here are the four most important distance-related stats from the Honda Classic, won by Michael Thompson: 

Longest drive: Nicolas Colsaerts, 367 yards

It’s the first time this season that the Belgian Bomber has appeared on this list. His tee shot Sunday on the 388-yard 13^th hole at PGA National traveled 367 yards, though he finished T-68 among the 75 players who made the cut. It was the fourth-longest tee shot of the year, but still not in the same stratosphere as Kyle Stanley’s 428-yard moon shot at Kapalua. 

Last four leaders: Northern Trust Open: Bill Haas, 366 yards; Pebble Beach National Pro-Am: Sean O’Hair, 355; Waste Management Phoenix Open: Gary Woodland, 379; Farmers Insurance Open, 367.

Carry distance: Graham DeLaet, 324.2 yards

The Canadian’s big blasts were just one of the reasons he finished T-9 at the Honda, his second top-10 finish of the season. Even in the whipping winds at PGA National, DeLaet’s 324.2 was easily the longest carry distance this season, surpassing Dustin Johnson’s 312.9 yards at Torrey Pines. 

Last four leaders: Northern Trust: Angel Cabrera, 298 yards; Pebble Beach: Robert Garrigus, 292.4; Waste Management: Jason Day, 311.3; Torrey Pines: Dustin Johnson, 312.9.

Clubhead speed: Gary Woodland, 123.16 mph

A fixture in this category this season, Woodland’s swing speed at the Honda was one of the fastest this season. Unfortunately, it didn’t help him much at PGA National, as he shot 77-76 on the weekend to tie for 68^th.

Last four leaders: Northern Trust: Charlie Beljan, 128.41 mph; Pebble Beach: Jason Day, 121.45; Waste Management: Bubba Watson, 122.48; Torrey Pines: Woodland, 123.61.

Ball speed: Graham DeLaet, 180.69 mph

DeLaet had both the top carry distance and ball speed at the Honda. His 180.69 falls in the same ballpark as the other leaders in this category throughout the season, though it was nearly 2 mph less than Charlie Beljan’s best tee shot at Riviera. 

Last four leaders: Northern Trust: Charlie Beljan, 182.58 mph; Pebble Beach: Robert Garrigus, 178.51; Waste Management: Bubba Watson, 181.69; Torrey Pines: Luke List, 181.69.
