A week ago Patrick Cantlay made history at Congressional when he scrambled for par at the last hole to become the first amateur since Jack Nicklaus in 1960 to finish a U.S. Open at even par or better.
In his encore, the UCLA freshman birdied or eagled half of TPC River Highlands’ holes on his way to a second-round 60, the lowest score ever posted by an amateur on the PGA Tour and the Round 2 lead at the Travelers Championship.
Despite his rapid success, don’t expect to see Cantlay among the pay-for-play set any time soon. Last Sunday at Congressional, his swing coach and caddie for the week Jamie Mulligan was asked what was next for the 19 year old. “His degree,” Mulligan smiled. “That’s the deal with all my students. They have to get their degrees.”
