Cantlay staying amateur after Open success

BETHESDA, Md. – As Patrick Cantlay approached the 18th green on Sunday at Congressional his swing coach Jamie Mulligan, moonlighting last week as the 19-year-old’s caddie, offered a sly smile, “I’ve got a present for you when we’re done.”

After the UCLA freshman scrambled for par at the last for an even-par 284 tournament total Mulligan informed Cantlay that he’d just became the first amateur to finish at or under par since Jack Nicklaus in 1960. Not a bad present, eh?

“Yeah, I’m liking it,” Cantlay said when asked about his accomplishment.

Despite his success at Congressional, where he tied for 21st, don’t expect to see Cantlay on the PGA Tour any time soon. He will return to UCLA next season and plans to complete his degree.
