Traditionalist Clarke yet to drink from jug

AKRON, Ohio – Darren Clarke, in the glow of his Open Championship victory at Royal St. George’s, told to anyone who would listen that he planned to use the coveted claret jug for something other than its intended purpose.

The Ulsterman’s fondness for Guinness is legendary and he made it clear the ancient jug would be running over “with the dark stuff.” But it seems the traditionalist in him had a change of heart.

Clarke told the media on Tuesday at Firestone, his first start in America following his major breakthrough in the south of England, that he in fact did not drink anything from the claret jug.

“There has not been a drink in it,” he said. “I didn't think it would be right to put anything in there. I'm not saying I won't, but at this stage – maybe Christmas dinner or Christmas lunch I might have a little bit of claret in there, but so far there's been nothing in there.”
