College student aces par 4, maybe on the fly

Talan Harlow, a 21-year-old junior at the University of North Florida, made a hole-in-one on the par-4 seventh on  Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass.

Harlow hit his Bridgestone E7 ball with a Callaway FTI driver with 8.5 degrees loft at the 322-yard hole and found it in the bottom of the cup, according to the Florida Times-Union.

"I was trying to run something up onto the right side of the green," Harlow said. "I've hit 3-wood on the green there before but you're never thinking of hitting it in the hole, even on a short par-4."

With the hole hidden from view on the tee, Harlow discovered his ace after believing his tee shot had gone long. Walking back to the cup, he was surprised with his discovery.

"I guess you never think to look in the hole first if you didn't actually see it go in," said Harlow.

The ball may have even gone in on the fly, as Harlow saw significant damage to the left side of the cup.

It is believed to be the first ace on a par 4 at either the Valley or Stadium Course, home to The Players Championship. 

The odds of accomplishing a par 4 ace are estimated to be as high as 10 million to 1. In the history of the PGA Tour, only Andrew Magee has made one on a par 4 when he his tee shot at the 17th hole at TPC Scottsdale in the 2001 Phoenix Open caromed off Tom Byrum’s putter and into the hole.
