Captain Couples keeping philosophy simple

MELBOURNE, Australia – U.S. captain Fred Couples has never been accused of over thinking things and Friday’s fourball lineup certainly speaks to the simplicity of his captaining philosophy.

Couples sent Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson out first following the duo’s commanding foursome victory, and followed with Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson.

“They wanted to go behind Bubba and Webb Simpson to get off second, and we put them there. We thought Hunter (Mahan) and (David) Toms would be a (good) clean up,” Couples said.

Sources close to the situation have told GTC that Woods requested the pairing with Johnson, who won his Day 1 match paired with Matt Kuchar but went 0-2-0 in fourball play at last year’s Ryder Cup.

As forecast, the winds have come up at Royal Melbourne as play begins two hours earlier than originally scheduled as officials try to finish before a storm arrives.
