John Daly probably wishes his larger-than-life story didn’t include large scores, but there was another chapter to add to his tale Saturday at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
After posting a 63 Friday to get himself in contention to win his first PGA Tour title in eight years, Daly stumbled to an 86.
Tied for sixth at day’s start, he plummeted to dead last among the 72 players who made the cut at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.
“This course, everybody shoots it low, but there are times where nothing just goes right,” Daly said afterward. “I short sided myself all day. If I missed a green, I had the most impossible chips. I couldn't make a 4 footer, and I had the lefts going, which usually if I miss the ball, it's right. So that confused me a little bit.”
Daly opened the third round with a par and then made a double bogey and a quadruple bogey.
“When you get off to a start like that, your body just almost goes into shock,” he said. “Every time I tried to hit a cut, I'd hit a pull, and every time I'd try to hit a draw, I'd flare it right.”
Daly, 46, was in good enough spirits to joke about what his future might hold.
“I asked Johnny the scorer if there was a chance I could get my amateur status back,” Daly said. “He said, no, it would take too long.”
Daly finished 187th on the PGA Tour money list last year, his best finish in the last six years. He is 132nd on the money list this season. Fully-exempt playing privileges for the top 125 in money will be determined following the season-ending Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic Nov. 8-11.
