Donald 'blessed' to be part of another winning team

Luke Donald has now been a part of two victorious Walker Cup teams and four winning Ryder Cup squads.

What gives?

“I have been very fortunate,” Donald said Wednesday on “Morning Drive.” “It’s certainly no individual who can win these events, and I’ve always had great teammates. There’s a certain amount of luck to go in that. I’m certainly very blessed that it’s happened.”

Of course, such a streak wouldn’t have been kept intact without Europe’s remarkable comeback Sunday at Medinah.

Actually, Donald said, the comeback began on Saturday afternoon, when he and partner Sergio Garcia took down the formerly dominant U.S. pair of Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in fourballs.

The turning point in that match came on the par-3 17^th, where Woods hit his tee shot to 5 feet, and the crowd was in full throat. Donald then proceeded to stuff his tee ball inside Woods, to 3 feet, and halve the hole with birdie to stay 1 up.

“I had a feeling of calm that whole day and the whole match,” the Englishman said. “I felt very comfortable on that tee. It’s never easy when Tiger stuffs inside 5 feet and you know you have to make a 2 to tie. But we needed that point. It just wasn’t looking like anything was going our way. We needed something to get our European fans on our side.”

When the European team headed into Sunday singles trailing, 10-6, Donald said, “we walked off in the dusk like we were even. Nothing was going our way and, finally, we won those two matches (on Saturday afternoon). It really lifted our spirits.”

First off in Sunday singles – “I felt very proud and honored that (captain Jose Maria Olazabal) had the faith in me to lead the team,” he said – Donald beat long-hitting Bubba Watson, 2 and 1, in a tone-setting opening match. He peeled back to cheer on rookie Nicolas Colsaerts, then caught up with Garcia and followed him all the way to the 18^th, where the Spaniard turned around a late deficit against Jim Furyk and won one of the critical matches of the entire week.

Playing in his adopted hometown, Donald went 2-2 at Medinah, running his career Ryder Cup record to 10-4-1.

“I’m still coming down off the high,” he said. “What an amazing week it was.”
