Someone needs to explain to me why the PGA Tour continues to fight a losing battle against the NFL.
The first three weekends in January belong to professional football. When we’re on Maui, golf goes head-to-head against wildcard doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. The same is true on Oahu when the great majority of Sony’s are tuned into the divisional playoffs, not Waialae Country Club.
And finally last Sunday the Bob Hope Classic and Champions Tour go head-to-head vs. the conference championship games. More than 50 million people watched the NFC title game. Nearly that many watched the AFC title game.
Fred Couples and Tom Watson went 65-64 Sunday and their relatives probably didn’t even see the classic duel. It’s time for the SBS Championship and Sony Open to end Friday and the Bob Hope and Mitsubishi Electric to end Saturday.
Golf is a great product. Maximize it. Fans deserve it, sponsors deserve it. I better stop before I get going on why next Sunday the Northern Trust Open ends at about the same time the Super Bowl kicks off.
