His hopes of victory were dashed in 2008 when he found water on the 17th hole in a playoff against eventual winner Sergio Garcia. This year he shot a final-round 69 to finish at 11-under 277, two shots out of the playoff between David Toms and K.J. Choi.
Goydos, 46, gained momentum Sunday when he made birdie on the par-5 16th. He then hit 9-iron to 12 feet left of the infamous par-3 17th but the ball did not release toward the hole as it historically does. He missed the putt and settled for par.
'Somehow (PGA Tour commissioner) Finchem suspended gravity for 15 minutes,' Goydos said. 'I don't know how. But has any ball ever stopped on that hill? Ever?'
