Haas headed home, won't defend at East Lake

Bill Haas

CARMEL, Ind. – Bill Haas won’t get to defend his title at the Tour Championship the week after next.

He won't get a chance to win the $10 million FedEx Cup jackpot again, either.

With a dismal finish Sunday at the BMW Championship, Haas fell out of the top 30 in FedEx Cup points and didn’t even qualify to return to East Lake in Atlanta. He was the star there last year, holing that spectacular pitch from the water during a sudden-death playoff victory against Hunter Mahan that propelled him to FedEx Cup champ.

“Honestly, it seems like the same old story,” Haas said of his late stumble Sunday at Crooked Stick. “Under the gun, I haven’t been able to get it done. It’s something I’ve got to address and get better. When there’s some pressure, a pressure situation, I’ve got to be able to bear down and shoot a good number and not just blow up. It’s frustrating.”

Haas started this week 28th in FedEx Cup points and was inside the top 30 going to the back nine Sunday at Crooked Stick, but he made bogeys at four of the last five holes. He didn't help himself with a chance to move into the FedEx top 30 at the final hole, where he three putted, missing a 5-footer for par. He was 33rd in FedEx Cup points when he signed his scorecard.
